What if your husband tried to kill you…after he was dead?

Jack Clayton dies suddenly, leaving his wife, Natalie Clayton, with grief, funeral expenses, and a nasty mother-in-law. Now, someone wants Natalie dead—and all the evidence points to Jack.

Detective Addison Conner, as a single dad, struggles to keep one step ahead of his teenage daughter while handling the department's increasing caseload, but he's losing on both fronts. An unexpected attraction to Natalie points out how empty his life is. Before he can solve Natalie's case and look to the future, the attacks become intensely personal. Then Natalie disappears.

On the rugged California coast, Natalie assumes a new identity and builds a new life, gaining at least part of the family she always wished for in the form of a needy young girl whose faith helps her deal with her messed up family.

But if Addison can’t catch the killer, everything Natalie's built may be destroyed.

For life isn’t safe, especially in Perilous Cove.

A story of Faith, Family, and Murder

Perilous Cove Perilous Safety Series Book 1 edition by Rich Bullock Religion Spirituality eBooks

This suspense novel begins with a rather heartless killer/arsonist-for-hire Tarz demonstrating his skill. Tarz weaves in and out of the pages with sickening frequency.

Then we're introduced to Natalie Clayton of St. Louis, Missouri. Her husband just died of an unexpected heart attack, and she's sitting at the graveside service with severe flu symptoms, listening to the chaplain drone on and on about a good man, loving husband, and devoted son. He surely can't be talking about her husband--although devoted son might fit. Firmly tied to his mother's apron strings, that tie was only severed by six feet of dirt on top of the casket.

Jack Clayton's mother, the illustrius Hilde Clayton, hates her. Hilde has her eye on the Governor's office. Hilde says Natalie is no good, and that she (Hilde) will assure Natalie gets not one cent from Jack's estate.

Natalie's best friend, Donna, who also closely resembles her, decides to spend the night with her. Natalie feels like warmed-over yuck and goes upstairs to bed. She wakes to unfamiliar noises, discovers an intruder. The intruder kills Donna and sets the house on fire.

Natalie manages to drag Donna (who Natalie doesn't know is already dead) out the window before the house is totally engulfed. Natalie winds up in the hospital recovering from a broken foot, burns, and the flu.

But wait--there's more. Enter Addison Connor, police detective, widower, father of fourteen-year-old Mandy. Arson and murder pulled him away from home--but he doesn't leave the teenager alone. He takes her along, and she sleeps in the car while he investigates.

You'd think Natalie would be safe in the hospital, but no. Someone tries to kill her roommate. They assign guards for her. When she is released, she has nowhere to go. No home, no friends (other than Donna, her husband made sure of that), no relatives. And apparently her husband had wiped out every savings and checking account they have on the morning before he died. And changed the recipient of his life insurance to his mother. Other than $9,000 in a safety deposit box, she is broke.

Detective Addison takes her to his home. And still someone tries to kill her, but Mandy instead is winged.

That does it. She buys an old jeep from a neighbor and heads for a house her aunt left her on the West Coast in Perilous Cove. Once there, she changes her name to Samantha (her middle name) Riley (her mother's maiden name).

But the killer follows her anyway. So do Detective Addison and his daughter.

WOW. This is a very interesting, well-written mystery, danger, a crazy man who likes fire, a new widow who finds out her husband had plans to have her killed - for insurance money, his mother who.....
This book is pretty fast going and I could not put it down, except to eat, etc.
This book does talk about God and church and has a few scriptures but not many. And if any of us had to go through what Natalie/Sam did, you would definitely want to know about Him. -- But no this book is not preachy & actually has very little about God or religion in it.
Perilous Cove is a well planned and well written narrative, with pleasant protagonists, despicable desperadoes, and a tangled web of relationships-- albeit somewhat predictable in the ultimate untangling. The plot has enough action, suspense, and tension to qualify as a four or five star yarn. Our heroine's survival depends on her resourcefulness-- with an assist from an inept assassin, and the intervention of lady luck. Cross-country flight and a new identity provide limited (and temporary) security. A budding romance, complete with a potential rival, spices up the story without a hint of impropriety. Colorful (not OFF-color) descriptions enhance the reader's enjoyment (e.g. 'the sound of the cypress trees sifting the wind').

With all of this going for it, why only three stars? Unfortunately, the book gets poor marks for editing and proofreading. Multiple typographical and grammatical errors-- and the occasional use of what is clearly the wrong word-- distract the reader and interrupt the flow of the narrative. A good editor would also have helped smooth out informational flashbacks with less jarring transitions.

A yarn this good deserves better treatment before it goes to 'press' even if it's self-published.
Boy are you in for a ride. This is not your typical formula Christian romance suspense novel. There's a hard edge here that pulls the reader from fiction into reality. You become emotionally involved as vividly described scenes play out in your mind and take you on an unexpected path. The story follows several months of the lives of the protagonists (someone wants her dead and anyone near her is in danger) and antagonists (he has a job to do and he won't stop 'til it's done).

There is an unapologetic yet gentle Christian thread that gives hope like a lifeline in the midst of fearful chaos as well as daily life. The story has periods of almost mundane daily life (never to the point of stagnant or boring), then bursts into high adrenaline action and danger. Believe me, you need the calm before the next storm. You'll find natural conversation, well defined characters, a well laid out storyline, and smooth transitions. There are a few minor editing errors mostly in the form of wrong words used such as morning instead of mourning. It's not to the point of distraction and considering the excellent quality of the story itself I'm more than willing to overlook a few errors.

The romance is light. There are no '...sigh' moments, but by the end of the book you know there is a mutual attraction (and so do the protagonists) and, there is a definite future between them. The story leaves one unresolved issue. You aren't left on the edge of your seat in a cliffhanger but there is room for more. It's good enough that I've already purchased the next in the series. This one will go into my reread collection. I recommend this book.
