Frederic provides a telling view of the people of the Mohawk Valley during the time preceding the Revolutionary War. The interplay of the different immigrants and their offspring was illuminating because of the superior attitudes of the British over the Germans and Dutch. The story is told through the eyes of a young Dutch boy as he matures under the tutelage of his British benefactor. One could better understand the German and Dutch colonists readiness to go to was against the British because of the picture painted by Frederic. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it highly.
