Mapp and Lucia is a novel written by E. F. Benson, published in 1935. Mapp and Lucia is the fourth of the Mapp and Lucia series.

Subtly brilliant comedy of social rivalry between the wars. Emmeline Lucas (known universally to her friends as Lucia) is an arch-snob of the highest order. In Miss Elizabeth Mapp of Mallards Lucia meets her match. Ostensibly the most civil and genteel of society ladies, there is no plan too devious, no plot too cunning, no depths to which they would not sink, in order to win the battle for social supremacy. Using as their deadly weapons garden parties, bridge evenings and charming teas, the two combatants strive to outcharm each other - and the whole of Tilling society - as they vie for the position of doyenne of the town.

Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E. F. Benson.
Benson's first book was Sketches from Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama.

A prolific writer, Benson created the famous Mapp and Lucia series, which satirized upper-middle class British life in the 1920s and 30s. He also developed a reputation for writing macabre ghost stories and other stories of the supernatural, which have been adapted for film and television.

Mapp and Lucia edition by E F Benson Literature Fiction eBooks

At something like $1.99 for all six Lucia and Mapp novels and several short stories in amazon's e-edition, this collection is the bargain of a lifetime for those who want to read all of the elegantly amusing E.F. Benson books about upper crust rivalries - especially the particularly vicious rivalry between the two women who are the title characters - in two charming English villages between the wars. There is nothing quite like the selfish, vain, and social-climbing twits in these classics, and I loved every minute of the time I spent with them. Benson is a superb writer, a man of great style and wit, and anyone who is looking for light fare, authored by an intelligent hand, need look no farther than his books. The collection got me happily through a very rough recovery after knee surgery. I started with the first book in the collection and read all the way through to the final one. I was very sad to find I'd come to an end and will greatly miss the characters.

Mapp and Lucia edition by E F Benson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This collection of novels by E. F. Benson is a must for anyone who enjoys reading British classic novels.
Delightful writing, and enjoyable easy reading. Have watched episode one of the recent tv series and immensely enjoyed the ever so English competition to be the "best" socialite. The book is filled with humor, competition, and all of the English niceties that go with that.
"Mapp and Lucia" is an engaging, enjoyable read. I recall seeing several episodes of the BBC's "Mapp and Lucia" series on PBS years ago. The book is bringing it all back to me, and introducing these delightful characters to my wife. The volume is easy to handle while reading in bed, and the print font is very easy on the eyes.
What a fun read. The premise of two elderly ladies in combat for control of a town's society is a gem. Both Elizabeth Mapp and Lucia Lucas are formidable in their own right.......together they are a juggernaut; then throw in Georgie for good measure and it's a laugh a minute. I am looking forward to other books in the series.
As an old lady, living in a small town I was amazed at how many of my friends and neighbors appeared in these stories. Mapp and Lucia became friends with whom I enjoyed spending time . If you have never lived in a small town you may not "get it", but you will find many smiles an more than a few LOL!
If you haven't read the Lucia books (including the one entitled 'Miss Mapp'), you really should. They are wonderful. Inventive, witty, edgy, and often hilarious. I've read the whole series several times, and enjoy the books just as much each time. Highly recommended.
Not for everyone. Jane Austen comes to mind. Geriatric P&P. Plus a bit of Steven Leacock or Samuel Mark Twain Clemens. No admirable characters you would want to identify with, but an aloof and humorous narrator holds it all together. This is why the dramatizations don't work. No entertaining narrator, just the excruciating characters. It helps to have visited Rye, a very nice place. Also an interest in things pre-WW2 will keep you going. I enjoy Benson, in small doses, but that's just me
